In the early days of subway writing in New York, writers tended to work on there own, and only those who went to school together or lived near each other ever got together. By 1972,however,writers had began to gather at a number of writers' corners/benches around the city. The first writers' corner was located at 188th Street and Audubon Avenue in Manhattan. Craig Castleman, Getting Up Subway Graffiti in New York 1982
"Here the best writers of Manhattan,Bronx and Brooklyn would come to meet, sign in,exchange gossip and, if feelings were right, go out and hit together" Hugo Martinez 1980
Once we found out the Bronx had a hangout at 149th street and Grand Concourse we started going up in groups, finding out who was who and what was what...and we started growing, 'cause we had our own communication system. Wicked Gary Getting Up 1982
The Writers Bench is situated less than 5 minutes walk from the Main Hall Kings Cross BR, the legendary meet up spot for the P.F.B 1991 Tube Party(see flyer below). The Writers Bench is all about writers checking out some crazy art, linking up,drinking, and partying together again like the old dayz...
